Speaking of Ronald Reagan's views on civil rights and
race in the 1960s, I just found a profile of him from Look
Magazine, right before he won the 1966 gubernatorial
election in California.

No, in that very interview, Lee Atwater says quite clearly
that there *used* to be a racist southern strategy in the
1960s but then claims they didn't use it in the 1980
campaign.

First of all, yes, the Democratic Party *was* the party of slavery and segregation for most of the 19th century and the early 20th century. And yes, the Republican Party in Lincoln's era was the party of civil rights!
Excellent textbook. Study it and then don't ever let a republican claim some racial high ground again. -dbciii

Kevin Williamson has responded to my thread about how
segregationist Democrats of the 1960s and 1970s were
roundly regarded as conservatives by just pretending that
we were actually talking about the 1930s the whole time.

You know who thought Southern Democrats were conservative?
The head of the Republican National Committee, who went down to Birmingham in
1952 to make the case that the Dixiecrats had a natural home in the GOP and should
switch.
You know who else? ME! I am old enough to remember before the Southern Strategy. -dbciii

A history lesson *is* warranted. Senators James Eastland and Herman Talmadge were southern *conservatives*— as were other segregationists, in both parties.

Poor confused @DineshDSouza challenged people to provide examples of Republicans who owned slaves in 1860, and we've done just that

Hey, I wonder what leaders of the civil rights movement had to say about comparisons between gay rights and civil rights?
Let's take a look!

White Supremacism
The realignment was clearest in the presidential contests of the 1960s.
MS broke its age-old ties to national Democrats and instead chose independent segregationists in 1960 (Harry Byrd) & 1968 (George Wallace) and a GOP opponent of the Civil Rights Act in 1964 (Goldwater).

Every major civil rights law of the 1960s -- the Civil Rights
Act, the Voting Rights Act, the Fair Housing Act -- was
introduced by Democrats in Congress, passed by a
Democratic House and a Democratic Senate and signed
into law by a Democratic president.
